What is SMD?

SMD stands for Surface-Mount Device, a method in which components are mounted directly onto the surface of printed circuit boards (PCBs). In the context of LED video walls, an SMD LED is a package that contains red, green, and blue diodes all in one. These are typically combined to produce the full range of colors on a screen.

SMD in the LED Video Wall Display Industry

SMD technology has revolutionized the LED video wall industry by enabling high resolution and a seamless, broad-spectrum color output. Each SMD component can independently emit red, green, or blue light, and their intensities can be adjusted to produce any color in the spectrum. This technology allows for the creation of LED screens with close-to-perfect color reproduction and excellent image quality.

In LED video walls, each pixel is typically represented by one SMD, meaning each tiny LED package is a pixel itself. This has allowed for significant decreases in pixel pitch (the distance from the center of one pixel to the next), leading to higher resolution screens. SMD technology is primarily used in LED video walls for indoor applications and where viewers will be relatively close to the screen.

Types of SMD Packages for LED Lamps

There are different types of SMD packages for LED lamps, and they’re typically named by their dimensions. Some common types include:

1. SMD 3528: These are 3.5mm x 2.8mm LEDs and are typically used in low-density LED products such as LED strip lights.

2. SMD 5050: These are larger, 5.0mm x 5.0mm LEDs. They can house three diodes per package, which means they can emit three different lights, making them ideal for LED strip lights that change color.

3. SMD 2020/2016/1515: These are smaller LEDs (2.0mm x 2.0mm, 2.0mm x 1.6mm, and 1.5mm x 1.5mm respectively), making them ideal for high-resolution LED video walls where a smaller pixel pitch is desired.

Please note that the numbers used in SMD packages refer to their size, and the trend in LED video walls is moving towards smaller SMD packages, as this allows for an increase in resolution and a decrease in pixel pitch.
